Tuesday March 23 2010
Time: 05:30 pm
Event: PDMA-NZ Networking Event
Topic: Automating the Meat Industry
Speaker: Geoff Bates, Industrial Research Limited
Henry Ford got his ideas on how to automate the car industry from the meat industry. Today quality car manufacture is almost completely automated whilst the processing of animal carcases is still largely a manual process. Industrial Research Limited has spearheaded a project to change this and Geoff will present the challenges and solutions encountered.
The Ovine Automation Consortium has grown from an idea largely considered to be a joke (with significant historical baggage) to a 16.7 million dollar vision of the future in which almost all New Zealand meat processors are investing. The project is a partnership of the end users, an equipment manufacturer and leading edge science. The presentation will cover the technical challenges and the perspectives of the various partners in this project and how these are managed to give the project the highest chance of success.
Geoff Bates has 22 years of product development experience in a variety of environments from university based research through to the down to earth approach that comes with a small NZ business. His current role with Industrial Research Limited focuses on delivering practical outcomes to customers in various industries.
